How to Grow Wintergreen

Overview

Wintergreen plants, also known as Gaultheria, are a delightful addition to any garden. These evergreen shrubs are prized for their vibrant green foliage and beautiful red berries that appear in winter. Wintergreen is easy to grow, requiring minimal maintenance once established.

Growing Conditions

Wintergreen thrives in partial shade to full sun conditions, but prefers cooler temperatures and moist, well-drained soil. They are native to North America and prefer acidic soil with a pH level between 4.5 and 6.5. Wintergreen plants can be grown in containers or directly in the ground.

Planting & Care

Plant wintergreen rhizomes or seedlings in early spring or fall, as these plants dislike the heat of summer. Water regularly to keep the soil moist but not soggy. Mulch around the base of the plant to help retain moisture and regulate soil temperature. Prune wintergreen after flowering in late spring to encourage bushier growth.

Common Problems

Wintergreen is generally a low-maintenance plant, but watch for signs of leaf spot or powdery mildew, which can occur if plants are too crowded or not properly aired out. If pests become an issue, use organic methods such as insecticidal soap or neem oil to control infestations.

Harvest or Enjoy

Harvest the bright red berries in late fall or early winter for use in jams, jellies, and syrups. The leaves can be harvested year-round for use in tea blends, adding a tangy, refreshing flavor. Wintergreen plants make excellent ground cover and are also popular in holiday wreaths and floral arrangements.
