How to Grow Tomatillo
Overview
Tomatillos, also known as Mexican husk tomatoes, are a unique and flavorful addition to any garden. These plants, belonging to the nightshade family, produce small, spherical fruits that can be green or green-purple in color. Originating from Mexico and cultivated long before Columbus' arrival, tomatillos have become a staple in Mexican cuisine, being used both raw and cooked in various dishes, particularly salsa verde.
Growing Conditions
Tomatillos thrive in areas with warm temperatures and high humidity. They prefer well-drained, fertile soil rich in organic matter. These plants are perennials but are typically grown as annuals for agriculture purposes. Tomatillos require full sun exposure, at least six to eight hours of direct sunlight daily.
Planting & Care
Plant tomatillo seeds or seedlings 2-3 feet apart in a well-prepared garden bed. Water the plants regularly, ensuring the soil stays moist but not waterlogged. Mulching around the base of the plant can help maintain moisture and suppress weeds. Fertilize your tomatillos with organic compost or a balanced vegetable fertilizer every four weeks during the growing season.
Common Problems
Tomatillo plants are generally resistant to pests and diseases, making them an easy-to-grow option for home gardens. However, they may suffer from fungal diseases if overwatered or in overly humid conditions. Monitor your plants for signs of pests like aphids and snails, and address any issues promptly with organic pest control methods.
Harvest or Enjoy
Harvest tomatillos when they reach about 1-2 inches in size, usually 60-80 days after planting. The fruits should have a slightly papery husk that surrounds them, which will darken as they ripen. Once harvested, tomatillos can be enjoyed fresh in salsas and salads or used in cooked dishes like soups and stews. They also freeze well for year-round enjoyment.
