How to Grow Stapelia
Overview
Stapelia plants are unique and eye-catching houseplants that originate from South Africa. These spineless, stem succulents have an interesting characteristic: their flowers smell like rotting flesh when in bloom. Although this may sound unusual, Stapelias make fascinating additions to any home garden.
Growing Conditions
Stapelia plants thrive in bright sunlight and well-draining soil. They prefer a dry environment, so be sure to water them sparingly. Temperatures between 70-80°F during the day and above 50-60°F at night are ideal for their growth.
Planting & Care
Choose a pot with good drainage and fill it with cactus or succulent mix soil. Place your Stapelia in an area that receives plenty of sunlight, such as near a south-facing window. Water the plant every two weeks during its growing season (spring to fall), reducing watering to once a month during winter dormancy.
Common Problems
Overwatering is the most common issue faced by Stapelia growers. Too much moisture can lead to root rot and fungal diseases. If you notice yellow or dropping leaves, check for excess water and adjust your watering schedule accordingly.
Harvest or Enjoy
While not traditionally harvested like edible plants, the visual appeal of a mature Stapelia plant is its own reward. As your plant blooms, enjoy the sight of these unique flowers and marvel at their strange aroma. Remember to remove spent flowers to encourage future blooming cycles.
