How to Grow Sempervivum
Overview
Sempervivum, also known as houseleeks or liveforever, is a delightful genus of succulent perennials that thrive in dry, sunny locations. With their charming rosettes of tufted leaves and rapid growth via offsets, these plants make excellent groundcover and are easy to care for.
Growing Conditions
Sempervivum love full sun and well-draining soil. They prefer a lean soil mix, as too much fertility can lead to lush foliage but fewer flowers. These succulents tolerate heat and drought well but can suffer from overwatering. Aim for a gritty, fast-draining potting mix if growing in containers.
Planting & Care
Plant Sempervivum in spring or fall, spacing plants about 6-12 inches apart to allow room for offsets. Water sparingly until established, then only during extended droughts. Fertilize lightly in spring with a balanced organic fertilizer if desired. Divide and repot as needed every few years.
Common Problems
Overwatering is the biggest problem for Sempervivum indoors. Signs include yellowing leaves and increased susceptibility to rot. Pests are rarely an issue. If a plant becomes too crowded, it may flower less and produce fewer offsets.
Harvest or Enjoy
The rosettes of Sempervivum are often harvested for use in dry bouquets or potted arrangements that don't receive water. The flowers themselves can be enjoyed cut or on the plant, attracting pollinators like bees and butterflies. After flowering, allow offsets to form and remove the parent plant once it dies back.
