How to Grow Pleiospilos
Overview
Pleiospilos, also known as split rock or mimicry plant, is a fascinating houseplant native to South Africa. With their unique ability to camouflage themselves against rocks, these succulents are sure to add an interesting touch to your indoor garden.
Growing Conditions
Pleiospilos thrive in bright sunlight and well-draining soil. They prefer a slightly acidic to neutral soil pH and can tolerate temperatures between 60-80°F (15-27°C). As succulents, they require minimal watering but should be kept relatively dry during winter dormancy.
Planting & Care
Plant your Pleiospilos in a pot with drainage holes using a well-draining cactus/succulent mix. Water thoroughly when the soil is completely dry, then let the excess water drain away. Reduce watering to once every two weeks or so during their winter rest period. Fertilize monthly during the growing season for optimal growth.
Common Problems
Overwatering and poor drainage are the primary culprits behind Pleiospilos issues. If your plant begins to rot or develop fungal infections, adjust your watering schedule accordingly. Pests such as mealybugs and spider mites can also be an issue; treat them promptly with organic insecticidal soap.
