How to Grow Nectaplum
Overview
Nectaplums, a delightful hybrid of nectarines and plums, are a gardener's dream come true. Developed by Floyd Zaiger, these fruits combine the best traits of both parent trees, resulting in a unique and delicious fruit. Although not commercially large-scale, nectaplums make excellent home garden additions due to their ornamental appeal and ease of growth.
Growing Conditions
Nectaplums thrive in well-drained soil with a slightly acidic pH between 6.0 and 7.0. They require full sun exposure, at least six hours per day, for optimal fruit production. These trees are heat tolerant but can suffer from frost damage in spring, so planting them in a sheltered spot is recommended.
Planting & Care
Plant your nectaplum tree in early spring or late fall to give it ample time to establish before the growing season. Dig a hole wide and deep enough for the root ball, place the tree, cover roots with soil, and stake if needed. Water thoroughly after planting and apply a layer of mulch to retain moisture. Prune annually to maintain shape and remove dead or diseased branches.
Common Problems
While nectaplums are generally hardy, they may face issues like leaf curl (caused by the tetranychid mite), which can be managed using organic pest controls. Other pests include aphids and scales, while diseases such as bacterial spot and brown rot might occur. Regular monitoring and timely intervention with organic treatments will keep your tree healthy.
Harvest or Enjoy
When your nectaplums ripen, they'll reward you with a sweet aroma and juicy taste that's hard to beat. The fruits are typically ready for harvest in late summer to early fall, depending on variety and climate. Pick them when they're fully colored and give slightly to the touch. Enjoy fresh off the tree or use in jams, preserves, or baked goods.
