How to Grow Loganberry

Overview

The loganberry is a unique hybrid berry, a cross between a blackberry and a raspberry. Its deep red, juicy fruit is prized for its flavor, making it a favorite among backyard gardeners and commercial growers alike.

Growing Conditions

Loganberries thrive in full sun and well-drained soil rich in organic matter. They are hardy in zones 5-9, preferring temperatures between 60-85°F. Loganberries require a trellis or support structure as they can grow quite large and bear the weight of their fruit.

Planting & Care

Plant loganberry bushes in early spring, spacing them about 4-6 feet apart to allow for growth. Dig a hole deep enough to accommodate the root system without bending it. Water thoroughly after planting. Prune your loganberries annually in late winter or early spring, removing dead or diseased wood and shaping the plant as desired.

Common Problems

Loganberries are generally hardy plants with few issues, but watch for vine borers and berry spot disease. If you notice spots on the leaves or fruit, prune affected areas immediately and dispose of them to prevent spread. For vine borers, remove and destroy any infested canes.

Harvest or Enjoy

Harvest loganberries when they are fully ripe and easily detach from the plant. This is typically in mid-summer for most varieties. They can be eaten fresh, used in jams, jellies, or baked goods, or even frozen for later use. Loganberry plants can bear fruit for up to 20 years with proper care!
