How to Grow Hazelnut

Overview

Hazelnuts are a delightful addition to any garden, offering not only beautiful foliage but also delicious, nutritious nuts that you can harvest and enjoy. These hardy trees are relatively easy to grow, making them perfect for both novice and experienced gardeners.

Growing Conditions

Hazelnut trees thrive in full sun or partial shade with well-drained soil. They prefer a loamy soil rich in organic matter but will tolerate clay or sandy soils if drainage is good. Hazelnuts grow best in regions with mild winters and cool summers, such as USDA hardiness zones 4-7.

Planting & Care

Plant hazelnut trees in early spring, spacing them about 15 feet apart to allow for growth. Dig a hole deep enough to accommodate the roots without bending them, and backfill with a mix of your native soil and compost. Keep the area around the tree weed-free and provide supplemental irrigation during dry spells. Prune the trees in late winter or early spring to maintain shape and remove any dead or diseased branches.

Common Problems

Hazelnut trees are generally pest-resistant, but they can be affected by leaf spot, powdery mildew, and a few insect pests. If you notice signs of disease or infestation, use organic methods such as pruning infected parts, improving air circulation, and applying natural fungicides or insecticidal soaps to control the problem.

Harvest or Enjoy

Hazelnuts are ready for harvest in late summer to early fall when they have fallen from the tree or can be shaken off easily. Gather the nuts promptly to prevent spoilage. After harvesting, clean the hazelnuts by removing any leaves and debris. Store them in a cool, dry place for up to six months.
