Overview
Daucus carota, commonly known as wild carrot, European wild carrot, bird's nest, bishop's lace, carrot flower, or Queen Anne's lace, is a beautiful flowering plant that can be easily grown in your garden. Native to temperate regions of the Old World, this hardy and resilient plant has become naturalized in many other parts of the world. While carrots cultivated as food crops are cultivars of the domesticated subspecies Daucus carota subsp. sativus, wild carrots offer a charming and organic alternative for home gardens.
Growing Conditions
Wild carrots thrive in well-drained soil with full sun exposure. They prefer slightly alkaline to neutral pH levels and can tolerate a range of soil types, as long as they are not waterlogged or overly compacted. These plants are drought-tolerant once established but will benefit from regular watering during dry spells.
Planting & Care
Sow wild carrot seeds directly into the garden in early spring after the last frost date. The seeds require no special treatment and can be simply pressed into the soil. Maintain a spacing of about 12 inches between each plant to allow room for growth. Water your plants regularly, especially during dry periods, and avoid overwatering to prevent root rot.
Common Problems
Wild carrots are relatively low-maintenance and resistant to pests and diseases. However, they may occasionally suffer from leaf spot or powdery mildew if conditions become too humid or moist. If you notice any signs of disease, promptly remove affected leaves and improve air circulation around the plants.
Harvest or Enjoy
The flowers of wild carrots are highly decorative and can be enjoyed in a cutting garden or as part of a wildflower meadow. The roots of this plant, while less sweet than domesticated carrot cultivars, are still edible and can be harvested once they reach about 6 inches in length. Simply pull them from the ground and brush off excess soil before enjoying their mild, slightly peppery flavor.
