How to Grow Coriander
Overview
Coriander, scientifically known as Coriandrum sativum, is an annual herb that belongs to the Apiaceae family. While its seeds are commonly used in cooking and medicine, its leaves, known as cilantro in the United States, offer a fresh, slightly citrus taste. However, due to genetic variations, some people perceive the flavor of the leaves as soap-like or rotten.
Growing Conditions
Coriander thrives best in well-draining soil with moderate moisture levels and full sun exposure. The herb prefers cooler temperatures between 60-70°F (15-21°C) for optimal growth. If grown indoors, ensure your plant receives at least six hours of direct sunlight daily.
Planting & Care
Start coriander seeds indoors about four to six weeks before the last expected spring frost date. Transplant seedlings outside once they have developed two pairs of true leaves and temperatures remain consistently above 60°F (15°C). Water your plants regularly, keeping the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Fertilize every few weeks with a balanced organic fertilizer to ensure strong growth.
Common Problems
One common issue with coriander is bolted plants, which occur when heat stress causes sudden flowering and seed production instead of leafy growth. To prevent this, provide your plants with plenty of shade during the hottest parts of the day or consider growing cilantro indoors where climate control can be maintained.
Harvest or Enjoy
Once your coriander plants reach about a foot in height, thin them out to allow room for optimal leaf development. Start harvesting leaves when they are at least two inches long, as this ensures the best flavor. For seed production, wait until the flowers turn into small, round pods. Allow the pods to dry completely on the plant before collecting and storing them for future use.
