Overview

Corchorus olitorius, also known as jute mallow, Jew's mallow, or Nalita jute, is a versatile and easy-to-grow shrub in the Malvaceae family. Not only does it produce the primary source of jute fiber alongside its cousin C. capsularis, but its leaves, young fruits, seeds, and even dried leaves can be enjoyed as edible vegetables, tea, and soups.

Growing Conditions

Jute mallow thrives in warm climates with plenty of sunlight and well-draining soil. These hardy plants are drought-tolerant once established but will grow best with regular watering in a sunny spot. They prefer a slightly acidic to neutral soil pH, ranging from 6.0 to 7.5.

Planting & Care

Corchorus olitorius can be sown directly into the ground after the last spring frost date, as it does not transplant well. Seeds should be planted about 1/4 inch deep and 2 inches apart in rows spaced 24-36 inches apart. Keep the soil moist until germination occurs, which typically takes around two weeks. Once established, jute mallow plants are relatively low-maintenance. They do not require much pruning but may benefit from occasional fertilizing to promote healthy growth.

Common Problems

One of the most common issues faced by jute mallow growers is powdery mildew, which can be prevented through proper air circulation and avoiding overhead watering. Overwatering or poorly draining soil can also lead to root rot in these drought-tolerant plants.

Harvest or Enjoy

Jute mallow leaves are best harvested when young and tender, typically after about 6-8 weeks from sowing. Young fruits can be picked as needed, while seeds should be collected once the pods have fully ripened and split open.
