How to Grow Celery

Overview

Celery (Apium graveolens) is a versatile and nutritious plant that has been cultivated for centuries. Known for its crisp texture and mild flavor, celery is a staple in many kitchens around the world. Growing celery at home not only ensures you have a fresh supply but also allows you to enjoy this vegetable organic and pesticide-free.

Growing Conditions

Celery thrives in full sun but can tolerate partial shade. It prefers cool temperatures, making it ideal for spring and fall planting. Well-drained soil rich in organic matter is essential for healthy growth. The pH level should be between 6.0 and 7.5.

Planting & Care

Sow celery seeds directly into the garden bed after the last frost when the soil temperature reaches at least 50°F (10°C). Thin the seedlings to about 8 inches apart once they have developed a few true leaves. Water regularly to keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. Mulch around the base of the plants to help retain moisture and regulate soil temperature.

Common Problems

Celery is relatively low maintenance, but it can be susceptible to fungal diseases in damp conditions. Ensure good air circulation and avoid overhead watering to minimize these risks. Pests such as aphids may also occasionally bother your celery plants. Regularly inspect your plants and use organic methods like insecticidal soap or neem oil to manage any infestations.

Harvest or Enjoy

Celery is ready for harvest about 90-120 days after planting, depending on the variety. The stalks should be firm and crisp. Once matured, celery can continue producing through fall if protected by mulch. For a longer shelf life, store your harvested celery in the refrigerator with the root ends in water or wrap the stem ends in plastic.
