How to Grow Cabbage
Overview
Cabbage is a versatile and nutritious vegetable that can be grown easily in your home garden. With its various cultivars offering different colors and flavors, this leafy green biennial plant makes for a great addition to any salad or cooked dish.
Growing Conditions
Cabbage thrives in cool weather conditions, making it perfect for spring and fall planting. It requires full sun exposure, at least 6 hours of direct sunlight each day. Well-drained fertile soil rich in organic matter is ideal for growing cabbage. The plant prefers a slightly acidic to neutral soil pH between 6.0 and 7.5.
Planting & Care
Plant cabbage seeds indoors 4-6 weeks before the last frost date, or directly in the garden when the risk of frost has passed. Transplant seedlings outdoors when they are about 3 inches tall. Water your plants regularly to keep the soil moist, but not waterlogged. Apply a layer of compost or well-rotted manure around the base of each plant to provide nutrients.
Common Problems
Watch out for pests like cabbage white butterflies and their caterpillars, which can ravage your crop. Use row covers or nets to protect plants from them. Clubroot disease caused by soil-borne pathogens can also be a problem in cool, damp conditions. Rotate crops regularly and improve soil drainage to prevent this issue.
Harvest or Enjoy
Cabbage is ready for harvest when the head is firm and fully developed. Depending on the variety, this usually takes about 60-80 days from planting. Pick the outer leaves as needed to expose the growing central head, which will help keep it crispy. Enjoy your fresh cabbage raw in salads or cooked in stews and stir-fries.
