Overview

Aleurites moluccanus, also known as candlenut or kukui, is a stunning tree that can reach up to 30 meters in height. Native to Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands, this evergreen tree produces unique drupe fruit that are not only visually appealing but also have various uses.

Growing Conditions

Candlenut trees thrive in full sun exposure and well-drained soil. They prefer a tropical climate but can tolerate temperate regions with proper care. The trees grow best in areas with temperatures between 20°C to 30°C (68°F to 86°F) and require moderate watering, especially during the growing season.

Planting & Care

Plant your candlenut tree in a sunny location with good soil drainage. Water it regularly during the first year of growth, reducing the frequency as the tree matures. Mulch around the base of the tree to help retain moisture and control weeds. Prune the tree occasionally to maintain its shape and remove any dead or diseased branches.

Common Problems

Candlenut trees are relatively low-maintenance and have few common issues. However, they can be susceptible to pests like scale insects and caterpillars. If you notice signs of infestation, use organic pest control methods such as introducing beneficial insects or applying neem oil spray.

Harvest or Enjoy

The fruits of the candlenut tree are ready for harvest when they turn dark brown and fall from the tree. The outer husk needs to be removed before using the inner nut. Once harvested, the nuts can be stored for up to a year in a cool, dry place. Enjoy the nuts roasted, crushed for oil extraction, or even use them to make traditional candlenuts for lighting.
